The Two-Minute Pause: Pack Cleanser

Some evenings, leave a little room for yourself.

    The short answer

Mugtea is your everyday facial cleanser. The pack is the same cleanser used at a slower pace: a thin layer on dry skin, a two-minute pause, then water, a light massage into foam, and a rinse. It takes about four minutes in total. It replaces your usual wash once or twice a week and needs no second product. You end up with a clean, comfortable face. Kaolin gets two minutes to soak up excess surface oil where you tend to shine, and you get two quiet minutes that ask nothing of you.

The kettle is heating, so you check a message. A page is loading, so you open another tab. The lift is slow, so you scroll.

Most days are built from these small gaps, and something always rushes in to fill them. By evening, it can feel as though you haven’t had a single minute that belonged only to you.

The Mugtea pack is a small answer to that feeling. It turns two minutes you were already spending at the sink into two minutes that are entirely yours: a cool, creamy layer on your skin, a timer you trust, and nothing to do until it rings.

    Why two minutes is enough

A pause doesn’t need to be long to count. A 2022 meta-analysis in PLOS ONE combined experimental studies of micro-breaks, meaning breaks of ten minutes or less from a task. It found small but reliable gains: people felt more energetic and less fatigued afterwards (Albulescu et al., 2022). Breaks unrelated to work did the most good. Checking email doesn’t count as rest.

A clear ending matters as much as the length. A break with no end point gets postponed, because there’s always one more thing to finish first. Two minutes has a clear start and a clear finish, so it fits into an evening that already feels full.

Repetition gives the pause meaning. In a series of experiments, people who performed a short, fixed sequence of actions before a stressful task felt less anxious and performed better. The same actions helped far less when they were described as “random behaviours” rather than as a ritual (Brooks et al., 2016). Apply, pause, wash away is exactly that kind of sequence: small, predictable and yours.

Timing helps too. Research on evening recovery finds that people who switch off from work earlier in the evening, rather than later, report better well-being the next day (Grant et al., 2026). The researchers recommend a deliberate transition activity to mark that switch. Washing your face is already the turning point of most evenings. The pack simply makes it a moment you notice.

You can deepen the pause with your breath. In a Stanford trial, a few minutes a day of slow breathing with long exhales improved mood more than the same time spent in mindfulness meditation (Balban et al., 2023). A handful of slow exhales while the pack sits is an easy way to let your shoulders drop.

What the pause gives your skin

The pack is one cleanse in four stages, and you can feel each one.

Spreading. On dry skin, the paste glides on as a cushioned, even layer. Because no water has thinned it yet, it stays where you put it. That lets you concentrate it where you need it most, usually the forehead, nose and chin.

Pausing. For two minutes, the layer rests on your skin. Microfine kaolin, a soft white clay, is naturally absorbent and takes up excess surface oil. It’s one of the gentlest cosmetic clays, which is why it suits combination skin that is shiny in some places and comfortable in others (Evigrade: kaolin). The pack isn’t meant to dry hard or crack, so rinse while it’s still creamy.

Foaming. Water turns the paste into cream, then into a soft lather. The main cleanser is sodium cocoyl isethionate, a coconut-derived surfactant that laboratory and skin studies describe as milder than soap (Ghosh & Blankschtein, 2007). A light touch is all it needs. More pressure doesn’t mean a better cleanse.

Rinsing. Lukewarm water carries away the lather along with the day’s residue and surface oil. Glycerin, panthenol and allantoin are there to leave skin feeling soft and comfortable. Mugwort, centella, tea tree leaf and cucumber complete the botanical blend. Pat dry, and your face feels clean without feeling stripped.

    Same tube, different pace

The formula never changes, only the order. The daily wash starts with water. The pack starts with time.

There’s no second product, no extra jar on the shelf, and no need to wash again afterwards. Adding water, lathering and rinsing completes the cleanse.

    How to take the pause

    1. Spread on dry skin. With clean hands, smooth a thin, even layer over your dry face, keeping clear of your eyes and lips. Use just enough to cover comfortably; a thick mask is unnecessary. If only your T-zone gets shiny, apply it there and leave the rest out.
    2. Pause for two minutes. Set a timer and put your phone where you can hear it but can’t pick it up. Don’t let the layer dry fully. If it starts to tighten or feel uncomfortable, rinse sooner. Never extend the wait or leave it on overnight.
    3. Add water and make foam. Wet your fingertips and massage gently, adding a little water at a time until the paste becomes a cream, then a soft lather. Keep your touch light and don’t scrub.
    4. Rinse and finish. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, including around your nose and hairline. Pat dry with a soft towel and apply your moisturiser. These steps follow the American Academy of Dermatology’s face-washing guidance: fingertips rather than cloths, no scrubbing, lukewarm water and a soft towel.

What to do with the two minutes

Very little, and that’s the point. Sit on the edge of the bath. Look out of the window. Rest your hands in your lap and listen to the room. Or take a few slow breaths, letting each exhale run a little longer than the inhale.

You don’t need to be good at pausing. You only need to leave the gap open.

    Make it yours

Start once or twice a week, on an evening with a little room in it, and use the pack in place of that night’s usual wash. Your everyday cleanse never needs the longer ritual. Some nights you’ll want the quick wash and your pillow, and that’s exactly right.

With combination skin, you can use the pack on your T-zone alone: forehead, nose and chin get the layer, while drier cheeks get the daily wash. Dry or sensitive skin can start with the evening wash alone and add the pack later, or not at all. Aim for clean, comfortable skin. More foam, more product or more waiting doesn’t make a better cleanse.

Do I wash again after the pack? No. Water, lather and a rinse complete the cleanse.

Can I use it in the morning? You can, though most people find the pause suits the evening. If you use it in the morning, follow with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

Does it remove makeup? For water-resistant sunscreen or long-wear makeup, use a suitable remover first, then take the pause.

My skin feels tight afterwards. What now? Use the pack less often, or skip it and stay with the daily wash.

    A few kind cautions

New to Mugtea? Patch test first, and get to know the daily wash before you add the pack. If anything stings or turns red, rinse it off straight away and stop using it; don’t wait for the timer. Take extra care with dry or reactive skin, and ask your dermatologist first if you use prescription skin treatments. The formula contains salicylic acid, so if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or allergic to aspirin, check with your doctor before use.

    When the timer sounds

Add water. The paste softens, your fingers move through the cream, the foam builds, and it all slips down the drain.

Then you’re back in your evening. The message is still waiting, and so are the dishes and tomorrow’s plans. For two minutes, they waited for you.

    Apply. Pause. Wash away.
